COLORADO CIGAR BARS Smoker's Club:
2006: Here is my list. Lots of people gave me incorrect information when they weren't a cigar bar-an obvious attempt to get me to give up and come to their smokeless bar. One said that you can't smoke anywhere in Colorado, another said that the city of Denver outlawed it, etc. A few of the places at the end of my list may be suspect, but I've called or been to most of them. However, one should check before going. I went to one last week in Aurora that billed itself as a cigar bar. I called and was told that yes I could buy a drink and smoke. It is called the "Smokers Friend" and was probably a cigarettte store prior to July first. It is run by emmigrants, so the language was a barrier and it turned out that they didn't sell beer or wine, which is what we wanted, only liquor. The ambiance was also very poor. Cool River restaurant on Belleview in the DTC has a nice one, but you can only smoke cigars in it. Go figure. I even called back and spoke to the manager. And things are still fluid, so I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them give up and go smokeless. Check first. Plese advise me if we get any additions to this list. A lot of the websites that show cigar bars predate the smoking ban and aren't correct. Brooks Steak House and Trinity Grill for instance. I'm told that there are about 25 or 26 and my list isn't that long.

Cricketer's Pub - SR 54, New Port Richey. Laid off 7 people and eliminated the kitchen shortly after the ban went into affect. Their food sales exceeded the 10% margin, so the owner had no choice but to make this decision. He didn't want to lose the smoking patrons.
Jilly's Pub - Main St. New Port Richey. Jilly's actually got rid of the kitchen long before the ban went into affect. The owner had no idea if he was qualified for exemption, so he decided to keep the establishment as a "stand alone" bar.
Freddy's Of Main St. - New Port Richey. MY HANGOUT!!! Freddy's done away with kitchen June 30, 2003. The owner was way below 10% on food sales, so she decided to keep her place a bar and not serve food at all, except popcorn. Best karaoke shows I've been to!

IOWA
City smoking ban snubbed out. Iowa City councilors unanimously agreed to repeal the city's smoking ordinance at their formal meeting after a similar ban in Ames was declared unconstitutional this month by the Iowa Supreme Court.
When the ordinance was declared unenforceable on May 7, 2003, several restaurants opted to allow smoking, while others stuck with the smoke-free option.
Carlos O'Kelly's Mexican Cafe, The Ground Round Restaurant & Lounge, Mickey's Irish Pub and Diamond Dave's Mexican Restaurant are a few establishments that are allowing smoking. Gringo's Mexican Bar & Grill, Okoboji Grill and Mondo's, before 10 p.m., are going to continue providing smoke-free atmospheres. While the Village Inn is still smoke free, that might change, officials said.

I wanted to tell you that Tony Roma’s restaurant in Westlake, Ohio tried going entirely non-smoking awhile ago for four days and changed back because I was told “it didn’t work.” However, the Tony Roma’s in Brunswick, Ohio is totally smoke free. I was also told by a Macaroni Grill restaurant manager in Montrose, Ohio, that they still have smoking in their bar area and have had no complaints from non-smokers so it may stay that way.

Vienna
I just took a trip to Vienna and Salzburg for five days for the New Year's celebrations.
Vienna is a superb place for a visit - a very busy city but one, which like many continental European cities, manages to be much more laid back and civilised, nevertheless, than cities in the UK. Salzburg is a fairytale location and the home of Mozart.
From a smokers' perspective it's great because although there are a number of no smoking areas in both these cities, there are still lots of places for people to smoke without any hassle including the majority of restaurants and bars. Moreover, at least a quarter, if not a third, of places on trains are available for smokers too.
So, for smoking US citizens seeking a European holiday and with a thirst for culture, both Vienna and Salzburg are perfect.
With regard to the latest smoking ban in the Czech Republic, one should not perhaps be too concerned about it. I have a friend who goes to Prague regularly and the first ban got watered down and it's a fair bet the latest one will be too, eventually.
