Public letter to The Smoker's Club and you the
readers...
Our Last Hope is You
June 22, 2009
You are our last hope. Not just for
smokers, but for every citizen in this country. Something must be
done. And you are in the position to do that something. Our
freedoms, our liberties have long been under attack. But for the
last several months, there has been a direct assault on everything this
country's founding fathers believed and held sacred.
The tobacco companies are but the first victim to fall to
this new oppression. And if they do not stand up and fight through
legal means, we will all begin to lose our freedoms, our way of life,
our ability to make a living.
Smoking is a
choice. What type of cigarettes I choose to smoke is my
business. What I choose to believe is my business. There
isn't a single person in this world who doesn't know that smoking is bad
for your health. Making people aware is where the government's
responsibility ends. Restricting the flavor of cigarettes?
Is completely and utterly ridiculous, and must be challenged every step
of the way. If it isn't, then the next step will be the cars we
drive, the health care we receive and the food we
eat.
There are so many things wrong with this new
legislation and I stand in bewilderment as to how this is not seen for
what it is. How this can be accepted by so many people.
Flavored cigarettes? Gone with the stroke of a pen. Light
and low tar cigarettes, gone. How can this be
constitutional? How can the government regulate a product in this
way?
I take no issue with cigarettes being regulated
by the FDA, but I ask our legislators this, now that the FDA is taking
over regulation of cigarettes, does that now mean cigarettes will be
healthy? Can we now smoke in restaurants and bars again?
After all, the FDA will make sure these cigarettes are safe,
right?
If you cannot see how wrong this is, then you do not
have the foresight to see this is merely a first step. There is no
need for this regulation against the flavor or marketing of a
cigarette. Why? Because all of this is supposed to protect
the children. To keep the children from starting to smoke.
Well, guess what? That law already exists. It is illegal for
children to smoke. Restricting the marketing does not restrict
children from smoking. It is not the flavor of the cigarette, or
the restriction of that flavor that prevents a child from smoking.
It should be the parent's responsibility.
We all
know that fast food is not good for us. There have been
documentaries made on the health risks. We all know the dangers of
fast food. So why not stop the marketing of Happy meals and
children's toys with their meals? If this is truly about the
"children," then why not restrict children's access to fast food?
Or at the very least, require a parent to purchase the meal for the
child.
This country is lost I fear. I fear we have
gone too far, we have given the government too much control. Every
time we sit down due to public outcry. Every time we fear for our
public name, or fear for our image, or what other people might say, then
we give away our right to stand up and speak our mind.
Everything is for the children. How long before we
sacrifice the Bill of Rights for the children? We've sacrificed
our cigarettes, our trucks and SUVs, the dishwashing detergent we
use. And soon the foods we so love. How much longer can
those who wish to control us, do so by citing the children?
How far does it have to go before you realize it IS happening.
Will you say today that they will never repeal the Bill of
Rights? What will you say the day they repeal the Second
Amendment? Or the First? Will you then make another
excuse? Or will you finally stand up and say "No!" What will
it take for you to stand up? How many rights do you have to lose
before you stop making excuses? Did you, ten years ago, say, "Oh,
the government will never tell General Motors who to fire." Or,
"Oh, the government will never take over the banks." But
today? You let it happen. What will you say tomorrow?
What will you say "they" will never do? What will they "never"
take away? When they do take it away, will you finally stand up
then? Or will it already be too late?
You feel you
have not lost any rights today because you do not smoke. This
doesn't effect you so you are no worse off than you were before?
That is not true. Just because you don't smoke, doesn't mean your
right to smoke hasn't been infringed upon. If you did want to
smoke, you couldn't choose the cigarettes you smoke any more. You
couldn't choose to smoke cherry flavored instead of regular. So
whether or not you smoke, you lost a privilege today. You lost a
choice. And what happens when they limit the use of SUVs and Pick
up Trucks? Just because you don't drive a pick up truck, doesn't
mean you haven't lost your right to the truck.
Where
is freedom? Where is liberty? Has it been so forgotten that
we don't even know what it is any more? It is not the politician's
job to tell us how to live our lives, to make our decisions for
us. Let us make our own. And let the parents protect the
children. Let the mothers and fathers of this country police their
own children. Let them take care of their off spring.
Because when we turn over our children to the government, we lose our
future.
Please. Wake up and scream at the top of your
lungs, "Where is my freedom? Where is my liberty?" I don't
need your protection. I can live my life the way I choose. I
can make my own decisions. I can choose to be wrong. And you
are not always right!
Please, don't let our freedoms slip
away. Please don't blindly watch our liberties disappear. It
is your duty as an American to protect the Constitution, just as it is
our loyal and honorable troop's duty. Our troops protect it with
arms, we defend it with our mouths. It is time for us all to begin
defending it.
